Vasilis’ nerd blog presents

New fonts

I switched fonts. While I liked my previous fonts I was never completely happy with them. I thought they were fine, but not really very Vasilis. So, when in the last few days the font service I always use became a bit unresponsive, I decided to find new fonts.

Alphabettes Soup

A while ago I received the incredible Alphabettes Soup Book. I thought it would be nice to restrict myself to only use fonts published in this book. There were quite a few fonts in there that I really liked. Some of them are not for sale yet, but two of my favourites are: the Biblio, which is used for running text, and the fantastic Decoupe which I use for all headings. I think both fonts are nicely readable, they have a pleasant kind of weirdness and edge, and so they are much more Vasilis than the previous fonts.

Restrictions

There are a few restrictions I had to work with. Usually I use italics to emphasis things. So whenever I choose a font for body copy, I make sure it has italics I like. But the Biblio doesn’t have italics at all. Which is interesting. So in this new theme, simple emphasis (or <em> for you HTML nerds) uses a bolder version instead of the usual italics, and strong emphasis (that’s <strong> indeed) uses an even bolder version.

Changing theme

I didn’t do a complete redesign, I only changed the fonts. Most of you won’t even notice the difference, which is fine. The difference can be observed though: All my old posts still use the old fonts, only the homepage of my blog and future posts will use the new font. This is by design, this is how I built this website. Every post has its own stylesheet, and doesn’t change whenever I change the theme. This means that over time you should be able to see minor changes, and my mood swings reflected in the design of the posts. This is the first one of the swings. I expect many to follow.
